How to Avoid Overdrafts

Understanding Overdrafts

What Is an Overdraft?

An overdraft happens when you don't have enough money in your checking account to cover a purchase, check, debit card transaction, or automatic payment. Depending on the transaction and your account settings, the payment may be covered or declined, and an overdraft or non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee may apply.

Tips to Help Avoid Overdrafts

Monitor Your Account Balance
Keep track of your available balance and any outstanding checks, debit card purchases, or automatic payments.

Set Up Account Alerts
Enroll in Online Banking and enable low-balance and transaction alerts to stay informed about your account activity.

Know When Payments Are Due
Be aware of when recurring payments—such as your mortgage, rent, utilities, subscriptions, or loan payments—are scheduled to come out of your account.

Use Overdraft Protection
Link your savings account to your checking account for overdraft protection. If your checking account balance is insufficient, funds can automatically transfer from your linked savings account. A small transfer fee may apply, but you'll avoid an overdraft fee.
